On a 2004 VOLKSWAGEN Beetle. How do you remove the Driver's side brake light assembly? I can't figure out how to slide the assembly out; it looks like there is a lever but I don't know how to engage it. I have loosened a nut that appears to be holding the light assembly in place.

it is a pain in the butt. the lever has to move and the light is very tightly mounted. let a shop do it for you so you dont break anything.

Remove the nut inside the trunk.

Gently pry up on the lens between the lens & the body (at the
bumper chassis seams)... you will see a metal tab, gently push
against it and the lens assembly will pop up & out.

I've struggled with them myself and almost broken one!

To the original poster, once you see how it is mounted, it makes sense as to where to lift/pry... until then, be gentle.
