2004 Toyota Tacoma This Truck 3 4l Auto Trd Version M Having 4wd

This truck is a 3.4L, auto,TRD version. The problem I'm having is the 4WD is not engaging. It seams to make a noise under the vehicle, but the indicator light does not come on, and I am on snow or slick surfaces so I know for sure that it does not engage.
Some times it will engage, but is more likely not to engage. Is there any chronic problem with this system?

have it scanned to see if anything gets picked up. you may have a motor bad for the 4wwd
