recently had a gear box fitted by a back street garage so to say but basicaly my gears are reversed say 1st is now 2nd and 2nd is 1st ,,5th is now reverse reverse is now 5th is this the 2 cables going to gearbox the rong way round ?

Yes, the selector cables will be mixed up.
