Have an 04 Sunfire, check engine light keeps coming on with the code P0442. We have changed the gas cap and the vent valve, there is no smell of gas. Gets horrible gas mileage when the check engine light is on and runs rich. Any ideas?

That code is for a small leak in the fuel vapor recovery system and can be due to a lot more than the gas cap. About the only way to find it, unless you're lucky enough to see it visually, is with a smoke machine. That injects white non-toxic smoke at 2 psi, then you look for where it's sneaking out. Suspect dry-rotted hoses, rusted off hose clamps, and things like that.

Other then the gas cap the hoses were the first things that where checked. My dad is a mechanic and we are trying to figure this out so that it doesn't cost me a fortune in shop rates.
