How can you tell the difference between a lifter noise and engine problems?

I'm getting conflicting opinions from mechanics and I'm not sure whether to be worried about the noise or not.

any noise is an issue, no matter what the mileage. a good trained ear will tell where the noise is coming from.

A valve lifter noise emits a ticking/tapping/clacking sound-engine bearings will be thudding/thumping noise-
