2004 Pontiac Grand Prix Accidentally Cross Connected Battery Cables Replacing

I accidentally cross connected the battery cables when replacing with a new one, all the sudden there was a large spark and then a cloud of smoke followed by a nasty smell!!! Help what do I do now and what damage has been done by doing this??

you'll need a new battery for sure and you may have burnt the maxi fuse but you can't tell until you put a new battery in and try to start the car.
