Just after you start the car there is a chime that goes off for fifteen to twenty seconds. There is no lights like the oil light or check battery light that goes off with the chime just the chime itself. What could the chime be. We have our seat belts on. All doors are shut.

It could be the seat-belt or door ajar warning. Look down where the driver's side seat-belt latch assembly is secured to the floorboard. You should see a two wire connector. Disconnect it and test continuity with the seat belt disengaged. Then check when the seat belt is engaged. One should be open one should be close to zero resistance.

Next test the door switches. You will have to remove the inner trim panels. Most door switches go to ground when the door opens. Remove the wire connector from the switch and check for continuity to ground with the switch depressed and extended.

It is not the seat belt or door chime. What else could it be?

Did you perform the tests I mentioned? The only things I know of in any car that makes a chiming sound is the following:
1: Door switches; not on a timer, door ajar with key in ignition.
2: Seat belt warning; engine running, seat Abelts not engaged; on a fifteen to twenty second timer.
3: Headlight warning chime; not on timer. Chimes when headlights are left on and key is removed from ignition.

So, something is shorting the timer for the warning chime.

I just need to know how to fix the chime system. I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am and it just stopped working. It is supposed to chime if you open the door with the key in, now no sound. It is supposed to chime when you first turn the key on five times, no sound, it is supposed to chime when you press the door lock to get out and unlock it, no chime and it is suppose to chime to remind you when it is time to change the oil or you are low on gas, no chime. Please advise how to fix. Is it a fuse or relay gone bad? I have three fuse boxes. One on the left, one on the right and one under the hood. Also, not chiming when the lights are left on and the door is shut. This all just stopped working last week.

The first thing we should do is check the fuses. Here is a guide and the location and descriptions of the fuses:

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

Sorry but the GM chime interface is connected to the radio system and I think there is a loose wire in the door because it comes on and goes off intermittently.

That makes sense because there is a BCM that goes out in these cars that controls the chime. Here is the location I would check the electrical connectors for corrosion/connection.

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

Just tell me where to look. I tried to click on the images and they would not load. BCM is the body control module? Would it be by the front left speaker? And would it control the left front speaker too?

If that BCM is in the steering wheel I am bummed because I cannot take that apart. The airbags are in there. I am not messing that up. I still think there is a loose wire in the left front door. Depending on how hard I shut it, it comes and goes.

The #9 connector in the diagrams goes to the BCM, but you say they do not open? Can you tell which browser and operation system you are using?
