at first fan nut came off and engine overheated. I replaced fan nut but fan now turning at low speed, so engine overheats. but when i cruise on the open road it does not overheat. if anything the temp gauge drops to zero. i wonder if thermostat is stuck open and my sensor faulty. i cant locate the thermostat and sensor.

Thermostat is usually located at the engine end of the upper radiator hose.

Fan nut.....??? The fan came apart? or loose from the radiator? Try hot wiring the fan to see if it turns at full speed. If not, replace the fan. It needs to be at least a 12 gauge wire.

It could be either the temperature sensor or the fan relay. The temperature sensor is located on the side of the engine. The fan relay should be in a box near the battery.
