car battery

i have 2004 nissan maxima. my car wont start when i turn the ignition i have to hit the gas pedal once or twice. problem just started happening since the cold weather came. i checked battery and it has a liquidy gummy white debris on it. is my problem just the battery? if i replace it will this aleviate the starting of the engine problem

is that gummy stuff on the posts? also. I dont think pumping the gas is helping you to start. its just coincidental I think.(just seems that way).IF that stuff is on the posts I would clean it off(carefully) and scrape them and the inside of the cables clean so that you have a nice strong connection, and see what happens
