Coolant from the radiator is going one way into the overflow tank and not returning to the radiator. I am able to drive for about 50km before the temperare indicator starts to go slightly above the mid temp range and drops back again. Coolant from the overflow tank sprays out from the opening. Could this be the headgasket or thermostart? My car has a brand new cylinder head.

That could be many things. The first thing you want to do is get the system completely full and all the air pockets out and then pressure test the system to see if it holds pressure. If not, look for leaks.
