Check the condition of the auxiliary battery first, then check the main if the auxiliary checks good. It's one or the other.

The message you mention pertains to an issue with the battery system. Using a multi-meter, make sure the alternator is putting out between 13.4 and 14.2 volts with the engine running and headlights turned on. If not, you have an issue with the alternator or regulator.
