When accelerating the car makes a grinding (almost like engine knock) noise above 4,000 rpm and accelerates much slower than it should. I have also revved the engine in neutral and park and it makes the same noise. The engine doesn't feel like it is misfiring and the check engine light does not go on. The transmission does shift gears although it seems to hesitate between 2 and drive at high rpm. Shifts no problem at slower acceleration. The more throttle I give it, the slower it accelerates as rpm's go up. If it was the transmission or misfire I would expect the check engine light to go on. If the stall speed converter was going bad would the check engine light go on? I'm stumped on this one.
