What causes a hard jerk in the engine causeing the check engine to come on right after?

I was driveing at about 55 miles per hour and suddenly my vans engine jerked hard and my check engine light came on. It has tured off again so i cant plug it up to see the problem.

I was told the problem wouldnt show up unless the check engine light stayed on. What can i do?
