2004 Jeep Laredo Overheating

Does this happen if you are at highway speeds? Have you checked to make sure the thermostat is working? Are the cooling fans running? Is the coolant clean and full? Has the radiator ever been flushed to clean it?

It does it in-town, the temp goes down with highway speeds. I have not yet had the fans checked. I had heard that with a vehicle this old (2004) that if the radiator had not been flushed previously that a flush at this point could damage it. I still need to check the fans and the themostat, but coolant is fine.

Okay, since the problem happens when you are driving slowly and in stop and go traffic, that tells me the cooling fan isn't doing its job. Yes, the radiator could be an issue, but since it doesn't do it at highway speed, I am confident it is a cooling fan issue.

When you are driving fast (highway speed) the air flows through the radiator much faster, keeping it cool. In town, the air flow isn't there. As a result, the cooling fan must take over and draw outside air through the radiator. If it doesn't work, the engine will heat up.
