my 4wd in my 2004 gmc sonoma stopped working...what could be some possible causes?

has push button switch, locked in fine, went to take it out and had to pull off the side of the road to get it to disengage. Once disengaged would not re-engage.

Could be the transfer case control switch, the computer itself have it scanned for code/s
