Automatic transmission in a ford freestar. First gear works fine then when time to shift into next gear experience loss of forward motion, does not shift into second gear and rpms spike. Have to come to a complete stop then first gear engages again. Is this a problem with the torque converter?

You have internal failure. It will have to come out and be overhauled.
No, the torque converter, if it failed, would not allow the car to move at all.

My freestar will not shift into 4th gear(OD)?
I suspect it is a solenoid problem as it shudders at about 45-55 MPH like it wants to shift.
Any help will be greatly appreicated.

Shuttering may be the troque converter. It may be internal failure.
