WHEN ON THE LIFT, DID YOU TRY TO TURN THE BOTH WHEELS IN THE SAME DIRECTION AT THE SAME TIME. AND WATCH THE SHAFT?
I KNOW LITTLE ABOUT YOUR RIG. IMMA JEEP KINDA GUY, I KNOW CJs WELL,
I WAS SORTA WONDERING IF "ONE" OF YOUR LOCKING HUB WAS ENGAGED OTHER NOT.(EVEN A BROKEN AXLE WILL SHOW SIMILAR SYMPTOMS) THE ONE LOCKED IN WILL SIMPLY TRANSFER IT'S "TURNING" THRU THE DIFFERENTIAL AND IT WILL SPIN UN-NOTICED AT THE "UNLOCKED" WHEEL. SOMETIMES THE DRIVESHAFT WILL NOT TURN, WHEN THIS IS OCCURRING, . BUT IF THERE IS SOME "TURNING FRICTION", IT MIGHT TURN. AT THE PRESENT STATE (IF THIS IS THE CASE) TURNING THE DRIVESHAFT WITH YOUR HAND EXHIBITS THE TRUCK NOT BEING IN 4x4 (EVEN THOUGH ONE WHEEL IS TRYING TO BE, 'CAUSE IT'S STILL LOCKED IN). PUTTING THE TRUCK IN 4X4 MAY INDEED, LOCK THE OTHER SIDE IN, AND ALL 4 WHEELS PULL.
BUT TAKING IT OUT, DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, YOUR 1 AXLE MAY "STILL" BE LOCKED IN, AND TURNING YOUR FRONT DIFFERENTIAL. AND THE OTHER FREE-WHEELING AXLE. AND THE DRIVESHAFT NEVER SPIN AT ALL!
NOT THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE---SAVE ON WEAR--SAVE ON GAS, WITH NOTHING TURNING UP FRONT!---REASON FOR THE LOCKING HUBS, MINE ARE MANUAL, AND YOU MUST GET OUT TO MOVE THEIR POSITIONS. I FEEL SURE YOURS ARE AUTOMATIC.
I COULD FORGET TO TAKE ONE OF MINE OUT, AND IT WOULD DO. JUST LIKE I HAVE EXPLAINED!
CHECK YOUR AUTO HUBS!
THIS MAKE SENSE?
LET ME KNOW HOW IT WORKS OUT!
THE MEDIC
THIS IS MY OTHER JEEP, 1946 WILLYS, ORIGINALLY THE FRONT END STAYED LOCKED IN PERMANENTLY, ENDS OF THE AXLES WERE "KEYED" INTO A BOLTED ON CAP---THEN LATER IN YEARS, THEY CAME OUT WITH THE MANUAL LOCKING HUBS----I ADDED THE MANUAL HUBS ONTO "WILLY"--NOW I DO NOT WEAR ON MY FRONT AXLE COMPONENTS, AND MPG IS IMPROVED!---I JUST GOTTA GET OUT NOW, TO GO INTO 4X4---OR JUST LEAVE 'EM LOCKED, THAT'S NO DIFFERENT THEN THE ORIGINAL SET-UP, AND JUST SHIFT INTO 4X4 FROM THE INSIDE. OTHER JEEP IS A '77 CJ 5. SAME SET-UP--EXACTLY THE SAME MANUAL HUBS.
