Battery light stays on but alternator charges fine according to the dash gauge and by testing. It's been on for a year with no other electrical problems.

That's a problem in the wiring of that circuit somewhere. It could be in the dash cluster, the harness or even the PCM and would have to be troubleshooted from a wiring diagram.
