Leak in Pinion seal or not?

I have been told that I have a leak in my pinion seal - what would be the symptoms of this?

THIS IS A '79 CJ 7

MY BUDDY BOB HAS LET THIS GO LONGER THAN I WOULD HAVE

THIS IS BAD, BUT IT COULD BE WORSE!

NOT ONLY COULD THE SEAL BE BAD, WORN PINION BEARINGS MAY HAVE WALLERED THE SEAL OUT.
