Fast Idle

I have an 04 Ford Escape that while driving at highway speeds yesterday would not idle down below about 30-40 mph. ( Very dangerous on icy roads.) There are no check engine lights on. I have visually inspected for loose vacuum lines and found none. I have now disconnected the battery and letting sit for a while. If that doesn't work, what would you suggest?

If the check engine light isn't on, scanning the computer will not help. Check to make sure the throttle is moving smoothly and fully returning back to an idle position. Also, remove and check the idle air control valve (IAC) on the throttle body. Make sure it isn't carboned or dirty. Make sure it is working. Have a helper turn the key from off to on while you watch the pintil at the end. It should move. If that is good, check the throttle position sensor.
