nearside front suspension arm has excessive play in a ball joint - please advise what repair work needs to be done and approximate cost.

Excessive freeplay mean the ball joint is bad and has to be replaced. If it is removeable, replacing the ball joint should suffice. If ball joint is inbuilt into arm, the arm assy has to be replaced. For costing you would need to check locally.
