doesnt shift

it will run and drive but when it gets to the point that it should be shifting out of first gear it doesnt shift. I have been told it could be the torque converter or the transmission shift solenoid but im not sire what to fix and I dont know what to lok for

The car won't move if there's a problem with the torque converter. The first thing is to connect a scanner that can access the Transmission Computer to read the diagnostic fault codes. Those will indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis. From there, there's an entire service manual with the steps listed to troubleshoot each fault code.
