grinding noise when in a slow left turn on 2004 Dakota, 2 wheel drive

Also hear it some when backing to the right. Local cmechanic unsure, thinks it mgight be ball joints

Have the brakes checked, make sure the backing plate behind the rotor isn't damaged and rubbing the rotor, and check both front wheel bearings. The right side would be the first to check.
