How do I fix an irratic idle?

I have a V8 engine and when starting in the morning the idle will increase to 1500 and down to 700 rpm. The idle will to do this until the engine warms.

The first thing to do would be to go to an Auto Zone ro Advance Auto and get the trouvle codes pulled.
That will help tremendously in tracking down the source of the problem.
