2004 Chevrolet Suburban Speedometer doesn't work

The speedometer has completely stopped working. Tachometer and all other gages operating properly. Chevy dealer says the electrical cluster needs to be replaced. Can't they replace the speed sensor instead of the entire cluster. Huge difference in price.

The clusters on these vehicles have a reputation of going bad. However, I would try the sensor first.
