2004 Chevrolet Silverado Code reader wont read codes

Check engine light is on running rough .It comes up unable to read codes. I live on a fixed income 66 years old

have a pro scan it his scanner may be able to read the code although it may be a misfire which are hard to diagnose.if it doesn't read the code he'll have to seeif it's just bad contact or whatever.
