I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 6 cyl. Owner's manual says oil capacity is 4.5 quarts. When it is filled, the oil level on the dipstick is one inch over Max. Why?

You could have the wrong dipstick but the capacity for that engine is 4.5 quarts.

You would have to get the right one and compare it to what you have.
