It sounds like the engine is misfiring. An engine can misfire most commonly due to faulty spark plug(s).
Since the check engine light is illuminated, have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes. As it can help detecting which cylinder might be misfiring.

Over time the spark plugs can foul out and have excessive carbon build up, that leads to a misfire. Inspect the spark plugs for wear and set the gap. They should be gapped at 0.060 in.
