I think the fuel pump on a 2004 chevy impala might b going out. I was told to change the fuel filter first and if that doesnt work then I should replace the fuel pump. Could the fuel filter cause the car to not start? Im a female and I dont know much about cars. Please help.I would appreciate it.

Check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure tester this can rule out both of them

The fuel filter cannot be the sole cause of a fuel pressure failure. It is a high flow, pass through system. A clogged filter will strain the pump and cause it to fail but will not cause the symptom on it's own. The pump has the power to overcome the restriction but will not do it for long. If you find low fuel pressure, replace both the pump and the filter.
