Need to know, what kind of trans. Fluid and how much to put in my daughters little cavalier, when I change the fluid and filter. It has no dipstick just a top fill port. Thanks Terry

Type - DEXRON III or Equivalent

There is a fill plug on the side which you need to get a pump for you can get it from any auto parts store for about $12.00

Check out the diagrams (Below)

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken

Transmission problem
2003 Chevy Cavalier Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My TRANS FLUID light came on, and then immediately went off, and hasn't come on since. I looked in the manual to see how to check fluid level, but could not find it. I went to Auto Zone, and asked the guy there how to check and what kind of fluid. He found the fill site and added half a quart of fluid. I have since found out you are not supposed to do that. Did he screw up my transmission by doing that?

He very well may help somethign screw up by doing things like that. Especially if the level was good and he overfilled it that much. Could cause the fluid to airate and then not lube properly and oxidize and not clean either. So id have a tranny flush and refil done asap.

Your car uses regular Dexron. How much it takes depends on what was done to it. If all you did was drain the pan, then it likely won't take over 4 quarts because most of the fluid staying in the Converter.

Here are the capacities

AUTOMATIC (3T40)
Bottom Pan Removal 3.8 liters (4.0 qts)
Complete Overhaul 6.6 liters (7.0 qts)
Dry 8.5 liters (9.0 qts)

AUTOMATIC (4T40-E)
Bottom Pan Removal 7.0 liters (7.4 qts)
Complete Overhaul 10.0 liters (10.6 qts)
New Converter 2.5 liters (2.6 qts)
