when taking off from a stop it gets to about 1000rpm's and it hesitates and the traction active shows on the display for a second or two it happens about 20 % of the time now otherwise the unit runs fine

Yep it sounds like you have a ABS wheel speed sensor that is starting to short out. Here is a video on how to gather the ABS and traction control codes.

If you don't have a scanner you can still check the sensor manually by following this guide.
