Just started using oil. 1 1/2 qts per 1700 miles. Shop wants to put in used or new engine. Says a repair would probably cause a domino effect in leaks with an engine this old. Is this true?

I believe they are selling you want they want, not what you need which is to identify why the engine is consuming oil at that rate. Another opinion is in order. An '04 Buick with 112k miles is not a high mileage car.
