I have a 2003 Toyota Avalon XLS and it was raining I turned on my wipers to the second setting which is slow but steady. The setting works then I turned my wipers down to the Auto position and every 3-5 Seconds the wipers would stop and almost studder then continue like that when I turned wipers off it stopped right there not resuming to the Home position. The speeds that DO work is Fast and Slow but steady positions. What could this be? I heard possibly a motor but why would 2 of the settings WORK then? Something else possibly?

Do you mean when you first turn to LOW speed mode it works and fails after you turn back to AUTO?

It could be a fault with the wiper relay or switch.

Yes, AUTO speed stops every 3-5 seconds and then resumes. And when I turn off the wipers they stop in the exact position not resuming to "home" thing.

Symptoms indicates a possible fault with the wiper relay.

Our database does not provide much information on diagnostics of the wiper system. What we have is a few test for the various components.

Would you be able to perform tests with a DVOM?
