Just to add to this one that is the water pump tool you need otc also makes one.Amazon has the best deal on the otc one its under 30.I have never seen or made a homemade one they probably tell you too since that tool used to be a special tool only and used to cost over 200.

The tools numbers are Otc 6616 that's the otc one and lisle one is 13800.

tool is special order not available to rent. i burned a personal day to fix wife's car today and found i cant even see the bolts inside to measure. access is directly opposite sidewall 1.5 inch clearance ...nice picture in book though with nothing near it

Put a floor jack under the oil pan with a block of wood then remove the upper motor mount and air box etc.Then jack the engine up this wil give you more room to acess the cover over the water pump gear.Then you can take a bolt out of water pump gear to match it up.Use a magnetic 10mm socket so you dont drop the bolt inside the cover.If you drop the bolt inside the cover your done.How bad is the water pump leaking?Can it wait to change it till you get the tool?Also does your book tell you to remove the exhaust mamifold to replace the water pump?

First of all, THANK YOU FOR THE HELP! Haynes book says to remove manifold but that is to access top thermostat housing bolt. have removed that without touching manifold. turns out thermostat WAS good, but still overheats without one. mechanic at work says water pump next suspect. ordering holding tool next.

So you were replacing the water pump because its overheating?A few things i would check before replacing the water pump.Are both radiator hoses upper and lower getting really hot after its been running for a while?Also do both heater hoses going into the heater core get really hot.If so i would say the water pump is working.Also is the radiator cooling fan operating correctly?

radiator cooling fan works properly,no heat in car but did not check heater hoses. upper radiator hose hot, lower hose not. after overheated with new thermostat i ran the car without it and it still overheated while lower hose did not get hot. i thought i went through the things i should check, followed troubleshooting in book, i am no mechanic, just have to make things work.

I would make sure there is no blockage anywhere in the cooling system.I have never seen a water pump not moving coolant on those engines.I have worked on them since they starting building them.Does the radiator fan blow out cold air?

sorry we have had no internet for 4 days. OK,radiator cooling fan works. Car still overheated with no thermostat and lower radiator hose did not get hot. Mechanic at work says catastrophic blockage not as likely as pump failure. So, how would i be able to tell for sure if pump is working?

By seeing if the coolant is pumping out of the heater core hose when the engine is running.If it is then your pump is working.Does one of your heater houses get hot?Also check your heater core for being blocked.If you can get your heater working your pump is pumping.I would say its more likely you have blockage rather then a bad pump.

The only hose that ever got hot was upper radiator hose. I called garage to replace since i had neither the time nor resources to do it. Turns out water pump was good, however, nothing was flowing thru it, The chain jumped the sprocket and then subsequently broke. So now am having timing chain and water pump chain replaced. Oh well...but thank you everyone for your help.
