I've got a small about of white gunk on the dipstick of my rover 75, there's none on the oil filler cap, and the cars just started to smoke from the exhaust

If the coolant is depleting, you could have a head gasket problem, especially if the smoke is white.

The white gunk is an indication of presence of coolant in the engine oil. Get a leak down test performed.

The head gasket job is not too cheap, should be around the 1 k region. The tests and checks should be a 1 - 2 hour job depending what tests you are conducting.
