2003 Pontiac Montana Car Fine Last Night Got Car Started Compressed Brake

Car was fine, then last night I got in the car, started it up, but when I compressed the brake and tried to shift out of park the gear shifter is free moving and will not engage any other gears. Any ideas on what could be the problem? Where can I look to try and find it? And is it something I can try to fix myself.

It could be your brake switch. Try lifting on the brake pedal with your foot. Sit in the seat and lift up. If you hear a click then try shifting.
