What is the temp reading? Is it boiling over? How do you know the thermostat is opening and closing for a couple of seconds? Maybe the fan is turning on and off?

first off i would make sure the thermostat is good.pull it out and put it in a pot of water and heat it till it opens, use a thermometer to check when this happens.it should be 190 -195 degrees.if the thermostat checks out i would next check your water pump for circulation and makes sure the rotation is correct.while checking your water pump also check the belt for tension.
