It depends on how many miles you drive, how often you change your oil and if you use detergent oil. If you are burning oil all the time "wipe your finger at the tail pipe if its oily" then chances are, your oil control rings are sticking if it is low millage engine. I would recommend taking your vehicle into a shop and ask the mechanic to do a hot oil flush. I did a early 2000's Toyota corolla that has this same issue in this model line, and a hot oil flush not only eliminated the burning oil, but also allowed the owner to pass her emissions test when before, it did not pass.
