car was using about 2quarts a week of oil. one day my car quit and wouldnt crank! my mechanic said the car had jumped timing. so he somewhat rebuilded the motor! well now only 3 cylinders are giving of enough compression #1 is low. what can i do to fix this problem. he said he tried everything and the the computer cant find anything? how much is the job worth? how long can my car last with 3 cylinder? what should i exspect? and the motor sounds rough and rides rough! whats idle low?

that's a rather complex design with 2 timing chains, 1 drives a balancer to help engine run smoother! i wonder what partial rebuild meant? did he take cylinder head off? replace any valves? usually low compression in 1 cyl is burnt or bent valve. i dont know what the work cost you but maybe it would have been better to put in a diff engine rather than try to salvage that 1?

rebuild would basically be new piston rings a valve job new engine crank/rod bearings. and new timing chain/gears and maybe new oil pump. and any other related parts that look worn out.

I believe the mechaninc is not sure of what he is doing. For this engine with timing chain to jump time, the engine would most likely be turned in the reverse direction. If the chain had jumped time by itself due to bad chains, you most probably would need a new engine.

After rebuilding the engine, the question of no compression on one cylinder shouild not arise.

Loss of compression can be due to leaking valves or bad piston rings and these should have been taken care of when rebuilding the engine.
