How to check differential fluid?

I want to check the axle fluid level on my 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport XLS 2WD. I am going to do this in my garage, I do not have a lift. Do I need to raise the rear of my car or I can just get underneath using a creeper? Do I check a fluid level through the filler plug with my finger? Where do I find it? How do I know if I need to add more? I have many questions about this because this is my first time doing it. Please give me a step by step instructions on how to check it, and tell if I need to add more fluid? Or how can I tell if the fluid is bad (old) and needs replacement?

When checking fluid level, vehicle should be on level ground so you can use a creeper to do it.

Remove the filler plug, shown in diagram, and fluid should flow out or at least at brim of the filler hole. You would need a pump to get new or additional oil in. If oil is not flowing out and you can feel it with the tip of you small finger, then level should be ok.

If oil is very dark and seems dirty, it is best to replace it.
