Hi,
There is a difference between the engine jumping and a knock. If the engine is jumping around, it sounds like a misfire issue. Whereas, a knock is usually caused by a failed engine bearing such as the main bearings or connecting rod bearings.
The first thing I recommend is to review the following link. It describes different engine noises and causes.

Next, if it isn't an engine knock but the engine isn't running smoothly, chances are it is related to a misfire. A misfire normally will cause the check engine light to turn on and flash when the engine is running. If the light isn't flashing but stays on, it could be related to a fuel pressure issue, engine vacuum leak, and so on.
Here is a link that explains the most common causes for the light to stay on:

If the light stays on or flashes, have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. That will point us in the right direction as far as possible causes.
Here is a video showing how to scan a computer:

I realize not everyone owns a scan tool, but most parts stores will do it free of charge.
Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.
Take care,
Joe
