2003 Mercury Sable LS, 3.0L FlexFuel OHC 6 cyl.

Car has trouble starting, it will take 4 or 5 times of tying to start before it will eventually run. This happens mostly when the car has been sitting for a while like overnight or when I leave my office for lunch or after work so at least a 4 hour time period. If I've been driving and have gone to a store and got back in the car it starts right up. The weather is warm so it is not related to colder weather.

The problem has started within the past two months, but here are some of the things worked on or tested for any help.

Battery tested good
Starter replaced last year
Spark plug and wires changed
Ignition coil replaced
Idle Air Control valve replaced

One mechanic suggested to turn the key all the way until the dashboard lights come on, but not start the car. He said leave it there for about 10 seconds and do this 4 or 5 times to rule out it being a fuel pump. I followed his instructions and the car still needed several attempts at starting. I could hear the fuel pump when I turned the key. Once the car is running everything is fine, no lights on the dashboard and the car does not stall while driving or sitting idle. At times the car seems to not have not such a smooth idle, but that could be me being over sensitive to the original problem.

Check the fuel pressure if its within specs with a gauge if okay test the engine coolant temperature sensor-this sensor acts as choke like in a carbuerated engine

It does sound like the fuel pump is weak and losing its prime over night. Check fuel pump pressure first thing in the AM before running the vehicle. There are directions and a video on our homepage under the DIY section.

I am pretty sure they checked the fuel pressure and said it was okay. A faulty PCV valve wouldn't have anything to do with it could it?

No, the PCV wouldn't cause this. Double check if they looked at the pump. It sounds like it is losing all the pressure in the line and taking a while to get back to spec.
