Having a hard time starting engine

Car will not start unless rag soaked with gasoline is placed in the air intake. What sensor or sensors do I need the check? Once it starts it runs great and can be restarted.

First, that is very dangerous. If you use starting fluid, without the rag, it would be safer. If the engine backfires through the intake, it will catch the rag on fire.

As far as the issue, have you checked fuel pump pressure?
