2003 Mercury Mountaineer Wheel Drive Started Making Popping Clunking Kind Noise

My Mountaineer is all wheel drive and it started making a popping or clunking kind of noise that sounds like it's coming from under the middle of the car. I hear the noise when the wheels are turning and it gets worse when accelerating. What is the problem?

have the rear trans mount checked as well as the universal joints

may be the wheel bearings...happened to a Mountaineer that we just towed in
