my 2003 mercury mountaineer calls for mercon atf for the power steering fluid. I put in gunk universal power steering fluid. there was still some old fluid in. now there is a bass sounding grinding noise when I turn the steering wheel. did I make a mistake? will this cause damage? what should I do to fix it?

If you used a universal fluid, it should be fine. If you are concerned about it, have the system flushed. As far as the noise, these PS pumps are known for having problems. You didn't list the mileage, so I don't know what is on it. However, they usually go around 100K
