We have had several ignition coils replaced (2x under warranty approx. 40,000 & 50,000 mi.) And now for a third time at 62,000 mi paid out of pocket. Is this a typical problem seen with the MPV? We were hoping to keep this car for a long time, but this was a costly repair now that the car is out of warranty.

Yeah, it's quite common. I've had three replaced on my 2003 MPV, and I need to fix another that acts up on rainy days. I'll probably do the remaining three all at once. (FYI, i've got less than 100K miles on it.) Of course, I'll replace the plugs, too.

Check the system grounds and make sure there aren't any shorts in the system. Coils shouldn't fail that often unless there is a problem in the circuit. You might also want to check the circuit resistance and how much current the coils are receiving. Too much current can cause premature coil failure.
