transmission wont shift out of first gear

I have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra. The transmission wont shift out of first gear. I was told by a mechanic that the catalytic converters were bad and he could do them for $1500 each. Is this possible?

car wont shift out of first gear. mechanic said it needs new catalytic converters.

The converters won't prevent it from shifting. Check the computer to see of there are any trouble codes for the trans. Also check the fluid level.
