There is no tension in my handbrake leaver but the cable is ok. What else could it be?

The leaver is really sloppy and doesn't stay up when uou lift it,
but the handbrake works if I hold it up

Check the parking brake sprag. It sounds like the gears are either stripped or there claw isn't engaging.
