I have a 2005 GMC that had the same problem. It has something to do with the cluster motors, GM had a class action lawsuit filed on them for it, they haven't done a recall but have agreed to replace the speedometer cluster for 2003 up to 2005 that has less then 70,000 miles for free and will replace the parts and you pay labor for anyt that has 70,000 to 80,000. I just had mine replace last week and it has 74,000 on it, they fisrt told me that I would have to apy a $100 deductable but when I picked my truck up they didn't charge me anything for replaacing the whoel cluster, so they my be replacing them now up to 75,000 for free. You need to contact your GMC dealer and ask them about it. On November 7, 2008, the U.S. District Court in Seattle granted final approval of a class action settlement for owners and lessees of certain 2003 to 2005 General Motors vehicles with allegedly defective speedometers (also known as “console clusters”).
