Truck fails to accelerate?

I have a 2003 chev. silverado pickup truck and it occasionally fails to accelerate. It has always done this after it is well warmed up , if it is shut down for a few minutes and I re-start it and pull out onto the hwy to accelerate , nothing happens. This will last for 5 or 10 secs. then it will respond and perform okay for several months . This has always happened at slow speeds.
Can you explain what could be the problem ?

It sounds like the fuel pump is going out but to be sure you need to be able to read the fuel pressure when the engine has no power or just replace the fuel pump, here is a guide to help to see how to position the gauge while driving so you can see it.
